The Bear Facts
March 12, 2011
Good morning! I’m Anna Kollasch!
I’m Kristin Berte!
And I’m Kelsie Berke! Thanks for joining us for the “Bear Facts”, the weekly
radio show from Bishop Garrigan High School.
Today Garrigan has twenty-six entries in the state individual speech contest.
The contest is conveniently right across town at Algona High this year, but
because it’s close the schedule meant more than half of BGHS entries were
scheduled early in the morning. Many of our entries have already performed, and
all but three will be done before lunch. The old saying goes that “the early
bird gets the worm”. We hope that’s true and that all the Golden Bear performers
do well today. Best wishes to all the speech performers. Break a leg, everyone!
Next week four Garrigan students will join other students from Algona High as
part of our area delegation to the Iowa HOSA Leadership Conference in Des
Moines. HOSA is the Health Occupations Students of America, and the local
chapter that combines Garrigan and AHS students has been very successful over
the years. Junior Sheridan Berte and sophomores Keni Roethler, Alissa Kirsch,
and Andrea Gisch are active in HOSA. They’ll be competing in different areas of
medical knowledge and skills, and we wish good luck to them and to chapter
advisor Jeanne Wunder.
The Golden Bear basketball teams held their award banquets last Sunday. On the
boys side junior Austin Vaske was named to the first team all conference, and
sophomore John Burns was a second team selection. Other letterwinners were
seniors Kevin Elbert, Andrew Behr, and Jacob Behr; and juniors Eli Marlow, Zach
Keith, Grant Reding, and Alex Boisjolie. The Bears finished their season with an
11 – 10 winning record, and they ended up right in the middle of the North
Central Conference.
On the girls side Chelsea Doughan and McKayla Loss were named Most Valuable
Players for the season, Shelby Schindler was the Most Improved Player, Aubrie
Meyers won the Miss Hustle award, Alicia Richter was named an outstanding
teammate, and Emily Bell was honored for her dedication. Chelsea Daughan and
Mallory Bormann were third team all-conference selections, and Anna Kollasch was
an academic all-state honoree. Other letterwinners included senior Kelsie Berke;
juniors Bethany Capesius and Addison Miller; sophomore Chelsi Lanus; and
managers Michael Hellman, Jake Rosenmeyer, and Jenny Broesder.
Track season has begun. This past week we saw people running through the halls
and around the neighborhood streets after school. Track competition will begin
next week with two indoor meets. Monday there’s a meet at Iowa State University
in Ames, and then on Friday the teams will be running at Buena Vista University
in Storm Lake. Good luck in those meets and throughout the season to the track
teams!
The regular season of intramural basketball finishes up tomorrow. Last week
Dillion Walker’s team—which is heavy on freshmen—upset Jason Reding’s sophomore
team by a score of 62 – 23. Tomorrow Dillon’s team will take on Philip Detrick’s
team in a game that will probably determine a playoff spot. The final regular
season game pits Jake Rosenmeyer’s team against Ashley Bode’s team. Games start
at 12:30 tomorrow in the Garrigan gym.
Again this year you can vote online for the All-Intramural basketball team.
Voting is open on the Garrigan website—bishopgarrigan.org. The online votes are
just part of the criteria for selection, which also includes total points scored
during the season. Award certificates will be presented at the championship game
later this season.
With pops concert and speech over, we’ve been busy getting ready for the spring
play. This year’s show is Better Football Through High School Chemistry. Cast
members include Hannah Bode, Becky Jennings, Nora Krahenbuhl, Shawn Vaske,
Philip Detrick, and Drew Magill. Also in the cast are Michael Hellman, Jake
Rosenmeyer, Alex Hamilton, Michael Fakler, Anna Kollasch, Melanie Mergen, Lizzy
Hohmeister, and Neal Koob; plus Erin Quinlin, Amelia Golwitzer, Matthew Fakler,
Nick Bronk, Kayla Blocker, Hannah Boisjolie, Brittany Kirsch, Allison Frideres,
and Alissa Kirsch. The curtain will open April 1st and 2nd, so mark your
calendar now for the spring play!
Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Hannah Bode and Eric Baumann. Here to
tell you about them are Aimee Dahlhauser and Michael Fakler.
Hannah Bode has been active in lots of activities at Garrigan. She was part of
the state champion danz squad, she’s been a four-year choir member, and she also
keeps busy with Christian Leadership in Action. This year Hannah was also a
member of the football and competition cheer squads. After high school she plans
to study at Hawkeye Community College and then transfer to UNI. We wish Hannah
all the best in the future.
Eric Baumann’s biggest activity is football, where he received all-district
honors and won the Larry Weir academic award last fall. He’s part of the top
student intramural team, and in the past he’s been in track. Eric is part of the
team that maintains the BGHS website. He’ll be off to college next fall, and we
wish him good luck.
Thanks, Aimee and Michael! On our Golden Bear calendar, there’s state individual
speech today at Algona High. Tonight we’ll set our clocks forward for Daylight
Savings time, and tomorrow the regular season of intramurals concludes.
Monday and Tuesday night we’ll have parent—teacher conferences and registration
at the Rochleau Center at St. Cecelia’s. The state HOSA conference is also
Monday and Tuesday, and Monday night there’s indoor track at Iowa State.
We’ll have mass on Wednesday, plus an early dismissal for professional
development. Thursday is St. Patrick’s Day, and five science students will
compete that day in the regional Envirothon.
There’s no school at Garrigan or Seton on Friday. That night the quiz bowl team
will sponsor their community trivia competition, and also that day there’s
indoor track at BVU.
That’s the “Bear Facts” for this week. Thanks for joining us, and be sure to
tune in again next week for more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
