The Bear Facts

January 14, 2012

Good morning! I’m Philip Detrick!

And I’m Andrea Altman! Welcome once again to the “Bear Facts”, the weekly radio show from Bishop Garrigan High School.

The quiz bowl team is back in action today. It’s been more than a month since their victory at Spirit Lake, and the Bears are hoping to do well again today when they compete in the Twin Lakes Scholastic Bowl at Sioux Central High School in Sioux Rapids. Bishop Garrigan is the defending champions in this tournament. In fact last year the Bears took both first and second places overall.

Today three teams from BGHS are competing at Sioux Central. The first includes John Richter, Rachel Berte, Allison Frideres, Matthew Fakler, and Grace Steil. Garrigan’s second team features Levi Bernhard, Hannah Bernhard, Zachary Kollasch, and Tony Kollasch. Competing on the third team are Jakob Hamilton, Gaby Steil, Taylor Illg, and Mercedes Espinosa. Good luck to the quiz bowl team!

There’s a couple of other events happening today as well. The math team has a tournament scheduled in Iowa Falls today, and there’s also the Meistersingers Music Festival at Wartburg College in Waverly. Philip Detrick, Nick Bronk, and Sophia Kaduce were selected to participate in the Meistersingers honor choir. Not all of them are able to participate, but we congratulate them on being chosen for the honor.

If you’ve been to Golden Bear basketball games this winter, you’ve seen the spirit squad cheering on the Bears. Mrs. Jill Boisjolie is in charge of the basketball cheerleaders. This year’s squad includes Rachel Berte, Hannah Boisjolie, Andrea Altman, Melanie Mergen, Erin Reedy, Sabrina Book, and Courtney Carlson; as well as Brittany Arndorfer, Amanda Altman, Taylor Frideres, Morgan Frideres, Caroline Hamilton, and Emily Berte. Thanks to our basketball cheerleaders for all their hard work!

The JV and freshman basketball teams have been having good seasons. For the boys, their most memorable night was probably a big blow-out win at Elmore Academy right after New Year’s. Steve Froehlich and Harry Condoleon coach the JV boys. The team includes Adam Hamilton, Dustin Miller, Michael Berke, David Klein, Bailey Kohlhaas, Neal Koob, Brayton Loss, and Chris Loss. There are also nine freshmen on coach Mick Elbert’s team. They are Ben Vaske, Andrew Miller, Jess Marlow, Tony Kollasch, Reece Wadle, Tyler Schnurr, Christian Matthews, Zach Kollasch, and Taylor Detrick.

This year’s girls’ JV team includes juniors Sophie Behr and Haley Froenlich; sophomores Nicole Behr Aisha Miller, Mallory Schiltz, Kara Eischen, Kristin Condoleon, and Taylor Hovey; and freshmen Emily Marlow and Betty Straub. Coach Dave Wieland assists head coach Brandon Schwab and works with the JV girls. Good luck to all the lower-level basketball players!

While we’ve had a lot less snow this winter than most of the seniors would like, we did have a few flakes last week during semester tests. That reminds us that we should announce the school dismissal policy. On snow days Garrigan and Seton always follow the decisions of the Algona Community Schools. Whenever there’s an early dismissal, though, because of bussing, Garrigan and Seton get out fifteen minutes earlier than the announced time. Weather cancellations are always posted on the main page of the Garrigan website – bishopgarrigan.org – as soon as we know about them, and of course you can also hear the announcements on KLGA.

Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Anna Morse. Here to tell you about her is Jennifer Broesder.

Anna Morse is one of the newest students at Garrigan. She joined us just this year, but she quickly became an important part of the Class of 2012. Anna comes to Garrigan from the Bancroft area. When she’s not busy at school she babysits or works at the KC Hall, and she enjoys hanging out with her friends. We’re glad Anna came down to Garrigan, and we wish her all the best after high school.

Thanks, Jennifer! On our Golden Bear calendar this week, there’s quiz bowl today at Sioux Central, math team in Iowa Falls, and the Meistersingers honor choir in Waverly. Tomorrow intramural basketball continues, with three big games scheduled.

We’ll begin our second semester on Monday. There IS school at Garrigan and Seton Monday, though the Algona Public Schools are off that day. We’ll have busing available from the parish centers.

Monday night the freshman boys basketball team hosts Eagle Grove. Then on Tuesday there’s a basketball quad at Clarion. Wednesday we’ll have mass, and there’s also an early dismissal for teacher inservice.

Also on Wednesday several students will be in Storm Lake for the Sioux City Diocese honor band. Then on Thursday there’s JV basketball at West Bend and the freshman boys host Ft. Dodge St. Edmond.

Next Friday the Bears have a basketball quad at Humboldt. Then on Saturday there’s district large group speech contest at Algona High.

That’s the “Bear Facts” for this week. Thanks for tuning in, and be sure to join us again next week for more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
