Bishop Garrigan students participated in the annual meal packaging event on Monday, December 12th. Students in grades 3-12th came together in one hour shifts to use their time to fill meals. Students begin their time in prayer and learning about the area these meals are being sent to.
Bishop Garrigan has been in partnership with Sisters of St. Francis for several years. Sisters of St. Francis connected BGHS to the Outreach Program out of Des Moines which is a group designed to help organizations package and deliver meals to those in need. The meals we package have been designated to those living in poverty in Mississippi. Meals are delivered to a food pantry where they are distributed monthly.
The Outreach Program provides us with all the materials needed for the packaging event. We receive all the food products, measuring devices, and step by step instructions needed to package the set number of meals. This year we were able to package 10,000 meals. Our Campus Ministry class managed the set up for the event as well as being table leaders and guiding the groups throughout the day.
The meal packaging is one part of The Mississippi Project here at BGHS. Along with meals, we have a yearly mission trip to Morton, Mississippi. Bishop Garrigan seniors are able to join on this mission trip which allows them to participate in service opportunities and learn about the culture and needs of the area. While on their mission they provide assistance in the food pantry and store and help as needed with clean up needs and spend time tutoring. This year we have a group of 12 seniors that will be participating in the trip.
The Mississippi Project is sponsored by The Sisters of St. Francis, Kemna Auto and Deitering Brothers. Their support makes it possible for Bishop Garrigan to continue to provide our assistance. Please join us in praying for our friends in Mississippi and for those working to provide care.
